new Akasa?

February 19, 2012

If this is true, 2012 won’t end; it will repeat infinitely into the void. We make few wishes around these parts; may the forces that surround make this happen.

Love, I will let you down.

AWAAS “Burial Ground”

November 27, 2011

If the doomsday prophets are correct and the world indeed ends next year, nothing could have prepared us more than this tumultuous 2011, a year of revolution, violence, and seismic change on every level imaginable. In March, the early promise of a new Gothic- and doom-inspired project entitled Corpse Pose crash-landed into the desert of unfulfilled promises. Mere months later, AWAAS arises, again challenging fans of its pedigrees (notably Important Records brother bands Ocean and Conifer). Existing thus far 100% independently (all recordings, videos, shows, and art are produced entirely by the band), AWAAS channels not just many familiar sounds of the 80s, but also the ethics which cemented those DIY / “us against them” bands into a cultural force still reverberating. We love beginnings because they create a welcome optimism for a future we often fear. So let’s cheer this beginning with all our suppressed passion, as it promises a future brighter than any of us dared imagine.

Oneohtrix Point Never – “Zones Without People” vid

October 10, 2011

It’s no secret that over the past couple of years, Oneohtrix Point Never has emerged as one of my absolute favorite musical acts. After seeing Dan Lopatin engage an audience at the Echo in LA with nothing more than himself, a vintage Juno similar to the model I own, and a few sequencers/FX units, I instantly became mesmerized. Fast-forward to now, and another late night acid-fueled experimental video has emerged. Enjoy, and buy his records.

Bestial Mouths “Skin Slipping Off” vid

September 25, 2011

Back in August 2010, Bestial Mouths opened for LANTVRN at Three Clubs in Hollywood and blew everyone up like an unmarked dirty bomb. No one was really prepared, but fortunately, I videotaped most of the set with my iPhone. More than a year later, I finally had an evening to put together a filthy, DIY, hack-and-paste vignette which attempts to capture the energy, grit, and beautiful violence exorcised by the trio that night, set to their early track “Skin Slipping Off.” Since then, Bestial Mouths have gone on to bigger and better things, but let this serve as a time capsule of the not-so-distant past and an awesome band on the rise during a L.A. night so hot that even the “ladies” at Santa Monica and Highland had to ask their dealers and johns if their makeup looked right.

Along with the dates listed on the graphic above, LANTVRN will be featured on an upcoming PoppyDisc Records compilation. PoppyDisc is the latest venture by Joe Foster, co-founder of Creation Records (a.k.a. one of the best labels ever), home of the Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream, and some relatively unknown TRDMRK favorite, My Bloody Valentine.
